The one rule you never break and that in your book nobody else should ever break.

I asked you previously in the HowHabit-Newsletter what your golden rule is and here are your answers sprinkled in with some of my own that I picked up along the way from various people, books, blogs, and videos.

But first, there is, of course, the famous rule from the movie Aladin:

“He who has the gold makes the rules.”

The Golden Rule:

  1. There are no rules.
  2. Always check for toilet paper before you sit.
  3. Don’t be so tight. You can’t always be right.
  4. Act with integrity.
  5. Don’t make promises you can’t keep or don’t plan on keeping.
  6. Everyone has a story. There’s a reason for the behavior of everyone. Reach out when you see people in need. You can change their lives.
  7. The first time you meet someone, treat them the very best you possibly can. From then on, treat them how they treat you.
  8. Never talk shit about anyone to anyone.
  9. Leave people and things better than they were before you met them.
  10. Be hard on the problem and soft on the person.
  11. Sharing is caring.
  12. What you give is what you get
  13. Wherever you go, there you are.
  14. You limit yourself more than anyone else limits you.
  15. The world doesn’t reward you for your potential, the world rewards you for what you actually do.
  16. If you only do what you have to do, you will never do enough.
  17. Don’t tell people what emotion they are feeling.
  18. Always assume positive intent.
  19. Be kind to everyone.
  20. If you have to ask “Is it cheating if…?” then yes, it’s probably cheating.
  21. Don’t care or bitch about anything outside of your control.
  22. Don’t worry. If you can change it, change it. If you can’t change it, why worry?
  23. You don’t deserve to complain unless you do something about it.
  24. Stay with people that make you happy
  25. Never cheap out on anything that separates you from the ground. Like shoes, beds, tires, and chairs.
  26. Don’t fuck with people who prepare your food.
  27. Buy memories, not things.
  28. Learn something new every day.
  29. Trust actions, not words.
  30. Never attribute to malice, even if it’s malice.
  31. The time you enjoy wasting is not wasted. But you may feel differently about it in a decade or two.
  32. Never say anything about someone that you wouldn’t say to their face.
  33. If you’re the smartest person in the room, find a new room.
  34. Be around people that are better than you at at least one thing.
  35. The customer is always right, but you have the right to decide when someone is no longer a customer.
  36. Behave according to the rules of the world you’d want to live in.
  37. If you say you are going to do something, do it.
  38. Don’t drink and drive.
  39. Clean up your mess.
  40. Don’t go grocery shopping when you’re hungry.
  41. At least think about the arguments the opposing side has.
  42. If you are always right, you never learn something new.
  43. If you’re early, you’re on time. If you’re on time, you’re late.
  44. Being nice costs you nothing, but pays for a lot.
  45. Be the person your dog thinks you are.
  46. Never criticize or make fun of someone’s job. The only job to be ashamed of is a job done poorly.
  47. Don’t be hung up about what happened to you, try to change it, because you can’t control what other people do to you, but you can control how you respond.
  48. Words are just words. You give them meaning. It’s only hurtful if you let it be hurtful.
  49. Trust yourself.
  50. In the end, everything will be okay, or it wasn’t the end!
  51. Unless there is a good reason, be kind to everyone. You never know what someone is going through.
  52. Be polite.
  53. Never pass up a chance to pee.
  54. Never make any individuals day worse than it was before they met you.
  55. Don’t expect someone to do more than what was initially agreed upon. Especially if they help you for free.
  56. Don’t eat yellow snow.
  57. Enforce your principles.
  58. Does it matter? No? It doesn’t matter then.
  59. If you can do it in less than two minutes, do it now.
  60. Ask a lazy person to do a hard job. He will find an easy way to do it.
  61. Do the right thing, even if nobody sees it.
  62. The safest way to double your money is to fold it and put it back in your pocket.
  63. Don’t mope during bad days. See them as character building days which are only there to make you stronger.
  64. The master has failed more times than the beginner has even tried. Try to fail.
  65. We work better when we work together.
  66. Don’t shit where you eat.
  67. Never loan money unless you don’t mind losing it. People trade relationships for money all the time.
  68. Be the person you aspire to be.
  69. Don’t give up what you want most, for what you want now.
  70. If you’re always surrounded by assholes, take a look at yourself.
  71. Don’t be an asshole.
  72. If you smell shit everywhere you go, then you’re probably the problem.
  73. Don’t be a dick.
  74. Don’t be a cunt.
  75. Time goes fast. Enjoy the moment and don’t waste time on regret.
  76. Don’t worry, take it easy.
  77. Nobody ever became an astronaut by accident.
  78. Do what you want and do it because you enjoy it. Don’t live your life the way others think you should.
  79. Try to leave this world better than when you arrived.
  80. Stop caring what people think about you. Because they don’t.
  81. Make the moral choice all the time, and you will never have regrets.
  82. Always thank the bus driver.
  83. Do your best, every single day!

These were over 80 great rules that give great advice to everybody who aspires to change their live for the better.
